As Allegheny Technologies, Inc. (ATI) continues to lock out 2,200 workers nationwide and 120 members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1046, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) wrote to the Richard Harshman, ATI President and CEO, urging him to reach an agreement with USW so employees can return to work. This lengthy dispute has already caused economic hardship for your employees and their families. Your company is critical for the economic health of Louisville. My staff reported overwhelming support for the steelworkers from the community during a local parade in September. I stand ready to help ATI and the USW reach an agreement that is fair to all parties and can ensure consistent, stable domestic production, said Brown in the letter. The contact between ATI and USW ended on June 30 and the parties have not reached an agreement to renew the contract. Full text of the letter is below. December 10, 2015 Richard HarshmanPresident and CEOAllegheny Technologies, Inc. 1000 Six PPG Place Pittsburgh, PA 15222 Dear Mr. Harshman: It has been brought to my attention that Allegheny Technologies, Inc.s (ATI) employees represented by the United Steelworkers (USW) have been locked out of their jobs for close to four months. Ive been informed that the company took this action after the USW Bargaining Committee offered to continue to work while bargaining for a replacement agreement. Due to concerns over healthcare costs, retirement security, and scheduling, it is my understanding that the USW declined to bring the companys last, best and final proposal to their membership with a recommendation that its members support the proposal. ATIs reputation in providing flat-rolled steel products for both the aerospace and the oil and gas industry is well-established. ATIs high-quality products are also used by our nations military to produce the materiel that helps keep our nation safe. ATIs reputation and its market penetration is due to a highly-skilled workforce that is recognized for its knowledge, dedication, and commitment to quality. With these points in mind, I ask that you return to the bargaining table to reach a fair and equitable agreement with your employees.
