Monday, December 21, 2015 YOUNGSTOWN, OH U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) visited Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley today to highlight a tax break that encourages individuals and organizations to donate food by providing a tax deduction for donations. With one-in-six people in the Mahoning Valley lacking reliable access to food, Brown joined Mike Iberis, executive director at the food bank, to highlight the need and urge Ohioans to donate to local foodbanks this holiday season. For too many Ohio families, the holidays are just another day when they will struggle to feed their children, Brown said. Thats when Ohios food banks step in to fill the void. But with increased demand and shrinking budgets, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and the dozens of similar organizations across our state need our help. No Ohio family should be forced to go hungry during the holidays, or any time of the year. Last week, the Senate passed legislation to reinstate or extend a number of tax deductions. Included in that deal is a permanent extension of a provision the food donation tax deduction that would allow individuals or organizations to deduct the cost of food donated to food banks or pantries.
