Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii), a Senate Armed Services Committee member and National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) conferee, successfully included $65 million to construct a child development center at Aliamanu Military Reservation and $39 million for a Schofield Barracks child development center in the Fiscal Year 2021 NDAA conference report, which is expected to pass Congress and become law in the coming weeks. Senator Hirono also successfully advocated for the construction of an $89 million aircraft maintenance hangar at Wheeler Army Air Field and $114.9 million to improve waterfront facilities at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to accommodate Los Angeles and Virginia class submarines. The need for quality child care has become even clearer during the pandemic. That need is especially acute for military families, as many service members are still performing their duties in person. I advocated for the inclusion of language that clears the way for the construction of two new child care facilities in Hawaii, so that service members can have peace of mind that their children are safe while they serve our country,Senator Hirono said.I also secured approval for other construction that will keep our state and country safe, including improvements to Wheeler Army Air Field and wharves at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Senator Hirono announced in June that she had successfullyincludedthe child care facilities andotherHawaii military construction projects in the Senate Armed Services Committee-passed version of the NDAA. ### Print Email Tweet Previous Article 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
