Sarah Saldaña To Be Considered Next By Full Senate WASHINGTON (Wednesday, December 3, 2014) – The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday approved the nomination of Sarah Saldaña to be Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, where she will lead the office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) hailed the nominee and called on the Senate to quickly confirm her. “Ms. Saldaña has earned a reputation as a tough but fair prosecutor. She has stated unequivocally that she will enforce the law, and we should move swiftly to confirm her,” Leahy said. ICE has been without a Senate-confirmed leader since last year, and Saldaña’s nomination to lead the office was approved on a 10-8 vote. Her nomination was also considered and approved last month by the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, where she earned strong bipartisan support. Saldaña currently serves as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, a position to which she was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 2011. Three judicial nominees to fill vacancies in New York, North Carolina and Virginia were held over by Republicans at Thursday’s meeting. Republicans also held over the nomination of Michael Botticelli to serve as Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
