Dr. Murthy, 37, is a physician at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He won confirmation on a 51-43 vote, with Alabama Sens. Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions voting against the appointment. Republicans have been vocal against his nomation after comments surfaced where he said gun violence is a public health issue, as well as his involvement with Doctors of America. Murthy co-founded the group, which supports Obama's Affordable Healthcare Act. The National Rifle Association has fought Murthy's nomination, citing a letter he wrote following the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In that letter, Murthy called for new gun control measures, drawing the ire of NRA. Murthy becomes the nations' first Senate-confirmed surgeon general since July 2013.
