Included in the bill is a $2 billion increase in annual funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the agency tasked with allocating federal resources for biomedical research. In November, Representative Kevin Yoder (R-KS) circulated a letter to his Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives calling for the largest increase in NIH funding since 2003. More than 100 Republican Members of Congress joined the letter as cosigners. Following the release of the Omnibus text, Representative Yoder issued the following statement: Diseases like cancer, Alzheimers, and Parkinsons know no political parties, regional differences, or effects of sequestration. They will kill more Americans this year than any war, and yet we spend a fraction of the money at NIH that we spend at the Department of Defense. Im working to change that, and this $2 billion increase is an important first step towards my goal of reemphasizing NIH as a top priority by doubling its annual funding over the next decade. We are in a war against these diseases, and I am bound and determine to win it. With more than 100 of my Republican colleagues joining my call for this new funding, its clear that conservatives are fighting on the front lines.
